of All-Time Summary Chart |
Greatest Box-Office Bombs, Disasters and Flops of All-Time The following summary chart provides estimates of the greatest film failures and flops (disasters, bombs, etc.) that potentially lost the highest amounts of revenue, based upon their estimated losses. Some films that appeared at first to do well (in foreign and/or domestic markets), were doomed to fail and not make a profit because their marketing and production budget costs were so substantial and exorbitant. Films that have lost over $85 million in revenue (adjusted for inflation) are usually considered to be among the all-time losers. Sometimes a film was able to recoup its costs years later, due to sales of ancillary products (DVD sales and rentals), TV rights, licensing fees, etc. The situation created by the COVID pandemic beginning in year 2020 and stretching into 2021 caused devastating effects upon movie-going. In mid-2020 through some of 2021, many studios resorted to streaming movies online before theatrical releases, drastically reducing revenues (or resulting in inaccurate revenue reporting). Therefore, it has remained difficult in the 2020-21 period to definitively state which films were true box-office bombs. Many of
the films in the list below
are reviewed in detail in the pages that follow. |
