Twilight (2008)
In director Catherine Hardwicke's blockbuster
- this romantic-erotic fantasy vampire film was the first of five
films in a long-running Twilight Saga franchise-series (from
2008-2012). It was an adaptation based upon the first of four novels
published from 2005-2008 by author Stephenie Meyer, about burgeoning
teenage sexuality.
The film's main plot was
about the strained, teenaged love relationship - one of dangerous
attraction - between pale, intrigued and mesmerized 17 year-old new-girl-in-school
Isabella ("Bella") Swan and handsome,
icy-to-touch, mysterious immortal vampire Edward Cullen.
- teenaged 17 year-old Isabella "Bella" Swan
(Kristen Stewart) had recently moved to the small town of Forks,
WA from Phoenix, AZ with her single parent father Charlie (Billy
Burke), Forks' new Chief of Police; there, she entered into a problematic
romance with 108-year-old, telepathic Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson),
immortally-stabilized in age as a teenager and a member of a dangerous
coven of vampires; unlike most thirsty, blood-sucking
vampires, the Cullens were "vegetarians" (who consumed non-human,
animal blood) in order to co-exist with humans
- Bella had her first view of Edward in the Forks,
WA High School cafeteria
- Edward rescued Bella from being crushed by a
runaway van in the school parking lot
- Bella also established a relationship with her childhood
friend, Native-American (Quileute) teenager Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner)
who lived with his father Billy Black (Gil Birmingham) on a reservation
near Forks, WA; the Quileutes, descended from wolves, were enemy-rivals
of the Cullens
- there were many smoldering, staring encounters and
intense conversations between Bella and Edward without consummating
their love (in school, in the woods, in a restaurant, in her bedroom)
highlighted by a few quotes: Edward: "I can read every mind
in this room. Apart from yours," "Your scent, it's like
a drug to me. You're like my own personal brand of heroin," Bella: "I'm
not afraid of you, I'm only afraid of losing you"
- their first dramatic kissing scene was in her bedroom,
where he often watched her sleep because it was "fascinating" to
him. He told her: "I always want to try one thing. Just stay
very still. Don't move"; as he slightly
gasped, he moved closer and pecked her on the lips, then she hungrily
reciprocated and grabbed his head; they both panted as she fell back
on her bed with him on top of her, still kissing; but then he suddenly
jumped back and commanded: "Stop it"; she apologized: "I'm
sorry"; he replied: "I'm stronger than I thought," but
she felt otherwise: "Yeah. I wish I could say the same";
he revealed his major fear: "I can't ever lose control with
you"; without sexually consummating their love, he remained
with her for the night
- later, Bella held onto his
back when he whisked up the mountain to view his sparkling diamond-like
skin in the sunlight, and later he took her to the tree tops above
his home: "You better hold on tight, spider monkey"
- Bella delivered a voice-over statement about him
after Edward had revealed himself as a vampire in the woods: "About
three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him - and I didn't know how dominant
that part might be - that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was
unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him" - after which
she saw him standing outside her bedroom window
- at the home of the incestuous Cullen vampire
family, they commented upon Bella's arrival, ("Here comes the human..."),
worried that their family's heritage-secret would be revealed
- Bella soon became endangered in Forks by three rival,
rogue and nomadic vampires: gifted tracker and sadistic hunter James
Witherdale (Cam Gigandet), his partner Victoria Sutherland (Rachelle
Lefevre), and Laurent Da Revin (Edi Gathegi), who were responsible
for a series of 'animal attacks' in town
- once the menacing trio became obsessed with Bella's
intoxicating scent and began to hunt her down, Edward and the Cullens,
including Alice Cullen (Ashley Greene) and her mate Jasper Hale (Jackson
Rathbone), unsuccessfully tried to protect her; Bella fled to Phoenix,
where the insanely-predatory, blood-sucking vampire thug James tracked
her at her old ballet studio, bit her arm, and infected her with
vampire venom

Edward Saving Bella From Dying By Sucking Out Venom
From Her Wrist
|
- four of the Cullens retaliated, broke James' neck
and burned his body, while Edward sucked the venom from Bella's
wrist bite to prevent her from dying and becoming an immortal vampire;
Edward was cautioned by his patriarchal, physician father Carlisle
Cullen (Peter Facinelli) - a 300+ year-old vampire, to stop before
killing her: ("Edward,
stop. Her blood is clean. You're killing her. Edward, stop. Find
the will")
- in the conclusion set back in Forks, soul-mates Bella
and Edward attended the Forks HS prom; in a final tearjerking romantic
scene between the young couple, they were dancing at their high school
prom under an outdoor lighted gazebo; Bella professed her dying love
for him, surrendered her neck to him, and they kissed; she
suggested becoming a vampire to be with him forever, but he refused to
make her into a "monster"; Edward refused
Bella's fervent desire to become like him, while she wished he hadn't
saved her, and instead had let the venom spread:
Bella: "...Why did you save me? You should've
just let the venom spread. I could be like you by now."
Edward: "You don't know what you're saying. You don't want
this."
Bella: "I want you. Always."
Edward: "I'm not gonna end your life for you."
Bella: "I'm dying, already. Every second, I get closer, older."
Edward: "That's the way it's supposed to be."
Bella: "Alice said that she saw me like you. I heard her."
Edward: "Her visions change."
Bella: "Yeah, based on what people decide. I've decided."
Edward: "So that's what you dream about? Becoming a monster."
Bella: "I dream about being with you, forever."
Edward: "Forever?" (She nodded) "And you're ready
right now?"
Bella: "Yes." (She surrendered her neck to him)
Edward: "Is it not enough just to have a long and happy life
with me?"
Bella: "Yeah. For now." (They kissed)
Bella: (voice-over) "No one will surrender tonight, but I
won't give in. I know what I want."
- they continued dancing to the tune of "Flightless
Bird, American Mouth," performed by Iron & Wine: ("Have I found you? Flightless
bird, jealous, weeping, Or lost you? American mouth, Big pill looming");
eavesdropping on them, Victoria was plotting to seek revenge for James' death
